The “kahvecibaşı” was a prestigious position in the Ottoman court, first appearing in the 16th century. This title belonged to the chief coffee maker, who served the Sultan and his court. The role wasn’t just about brewing coffee, but also about managing the coffeehouses and preparing the perfect cup, symbolizing hospitality and status. Kahvecibaşı often became close confidants of the Sultan, gaining influence in the palace because they were trusted with intimate settings and royal secrets.
It's an example of how coffee intertwined with Ottoman culture and governance.
